Back in the Saddle Again!

back-in-the-saddleI’m back in the saddle again and listing like crazy. I think I’ve finally hit my eBay and listing stride! I had a great weekend of fun but was also able to get a great deal of work done and I’m happy to report I have officially listed some personal stuff from my house!

It’s been hard to get to it because I had these piles of other things that seemed to get in the way. I did get some larger items listed in hopes of selling them off quickly and getting them out of the way and that worked. Then I had a basket full of lip balm that I sourced after Christmas that I wanted to get sorted and listed. Then there was that basket of shorts and summer tees staring at me every day and well, you get the picture!

117_3453I managed to get a bunch of that “have to do” stuff done and I was actually able to get the decor pieces from my laundry room listed…yeah me! This is what my laundry room looked like and while it was fun to collect the pieces and put it together over the years, when I packed it all away to move I just saw dollar signs. I decided to create a new store category “Laundry Room” just to keep all the decor together and organized and that seemed to work well. I’ll probably do that for some of the other rooms and collections as I prepare to list them. Click on the “laundry Room” link above to see all the fun stuff I managed to get listed.

But that wasn’t all…I was on a mission and that mission ended with 106 new listings!

I hate, hate, hate listing clothes!  I hate taking pictures, measuring, describing, just all of it. But the problem with that mentality is that clothes are such a great revenue source that it’s hard NOT to list and sell them. So when I stumbled onto a bunch of Danskin athletic shorts for $1-$3 I scooped them up and bought about 100 pairs. And guess what….I got those photographed and listed this weekend too..YEAH ME AGAIN!

AG BoxesBut I didn’t stop there…I was on a roll. I had a few things I was selling for some girls I know and I wanted to get them listed, off my desk, and put into inventory. I also had a box full of these same items that I sourced off a local Facebook group and another bag a friend had given me after Christmas. These are long tail items that are quick and easy to list and I wanted to get them photographed, listed and out of the way. You’ll never guess what I was so anxious to get listed….EMPTY American Girl Boxes. Yup, you read that right! I’ve been selling the boxes that my niece’s American Girl dolls, clothes, accessories, furniture, etc. come in and they have been raking in the bucks! I’ve got two nieces that were into American Girl dolls from the time they were five until they were about 13 or 14….and they have quite the collection of American Girl stuff. I’m not sure when or why I started listing these boxes, but I’m sure it started on a whim, one of those “let’s list it and see if it sells” experiments. Well they did sell and my older niece made over $1,000 selling her empty boxes over the years! She earned that much money selling TRASH!  How crazy is that!? My AG Empty Box inventory was waaay down and I manged to take pictures and post most of the ones I have to list, but I’m not done yet…that’s the first thing on the ‘to do’ list in the morning. I estimate I’ve got about 60 more to get listed and it is my goal to get them all done tomorrow…wish me luck!

What’s Selling on eBay?

Christmas Sells

Christmas sells118_1198 all year…even when it’s 120* in Phoenix! I sold 8 packages of Garland on eBay today. See the $.98 price on there? That’s what they sell when you want/need them in December. When you want them in June, they are priced at $9.99 and I made $80 on them today. Of course I bought them when they were on clearance at 75% off, so my $2 investment netted me about $65 after fees and shipping. Don’t be afraid to price your items higher, much higher than retail. I do this all the time with my items, especially seasonal things. These are headed to Fresno, CA

Nostalgia Sells

KooshI picked up 15 of these for $10 at our community garage sale about two years ago. I priced them high because I knew they would be HTF new in package. I think I sold the first few at $79.99 then dropped the price to $44.99 and sold a few more. Pushed the price back up to $54.99 and have sold all but two. This weekends sale is to a new eBay buyer. I LOVE when a newbie finds my stuff and buys it. That tells me my keywords are working. Who else remembers these from the 90’s? We had Koosh ball wars at the office. VHS Sells

VHSVHS is not dead, I think it’s actually picking up. I posted a bunch of movies when I cleaned out my office to move. This is about the third of fourth set of movies I’ve sold. Not a ton of money, but money none-the-less. A little time and effort and some cash in my pocket versus dumping in a box and dropping off at a thrift store.

 

 

 

 

 

Men’s Shoes Sell

ShoesThis one is another LiFi (List It and Forget It) successful sale. I bought these at a Savers in Las Vegas for $9 in 2014. I listed them February 6, 2014 and priced them HIGH. This sales model isn’t for everyone, but the way I look at it 98% my work is done when I list the item. I can price it at $50 and sell in a month or two or price it at $150 and sell in two years. Keep in mind that in the past few months I’ve put my clothing items on sale for 50% off at least 5 times and these didn’t sell. I point that out just to show that price isn’t the only factor in selling an item…especially shoes. I needed to wait for someone to come along that was a size 11, wanted this style of shoe, in this color and was willing to pay the price. Had he been looking any number of times the past few months, he would’ve gotten them for a 50% discount.  Better yet, the buyer is happy as can be and left fabulous feedback. Everyone wins!

Overalls Sell

OshKoshAnother great LiFi sale…this one only took about 10 months. This is a pair of Osh Kosh overalls I bought for myself when I thought it would be cute to match my then 4 year old niece who is now 23. I haven’t worn them in years and put them up last August for $60. You may think that $60 is too much to pay for a pair of used and altered overalls, but I didn’t. They are overalls and hard to find. I saw the value in them, especially since they were adult Osh Kosh and priced them accordingly. Waiting 10 months for something to sell, especially clothing, is no time at all. Price you items as though they have value and be patient for the right person to come along. It WILL happen!

Ash Trays Sell

AshTrayHere’s another good example of LiFi…listing something and waiting for the right buyer to come along. I purchased this Live at the Roxy ashtray for $2 on a thrifting trip with Jason T Smith in 2014. I grew up in Southern CA and have never been to the Roxy, but I recognized the logo. Jason has been to more concerts than all my friends combined and he wasn’t sure of the logo when I found it so we had to do a quick internet search to make sure. I listed it Aug 15, 2014 and it sold this month….$50 for a flippin’ ash tray! Small item, not taking up any space in my inventory area, priced it high, let it ride and today was pay day!

Running Sales and Moving Inventory

SuperSaleI’ve never found that running an eBay sale really helps to move inventory, but I decided, what the heck, let’s give it a try! I meticulously went through each store category and created a sale for nearly every one. Everything was 25%-50% off. I’m really trying to move my clothes so nearly 1,000 items in my store were 50% off! While I can say that the process for putting specific categories on sale is very s-l-o-w and tedious,(and something I added to my eBay list of ‘improvements needed’) once you have those sales created, it’s pretty easy to edit them and ‘reuse’ a previous sale. You may run into an error when your sale goes live if you’ve previously sold an item in that category, but just click through and carry on, the sale will apply to all remaining items in that category.

Initially I ran the sale with just about everything in my store on sale..I did that 2-3 times but got discouraged when sales didn’t pan out. A few days ago I decided instead of running one Super Sale each weekend, I would take the 35 sales I’ve already created and list five of them each day. So every day for the next week I will start five new sales. Each one will run for three days and end at midnight that last day. I don’t think this approach will actually generate more sales, but it was a fun way to get them going again without spending two hours generating sales for 35 categories. Seriously, eBay REALLY needs to work on a way to make this process better!

!25Off SaleI want to put all my Red Kitchen stuff on a 25% off sale, but there are 3-4 items where that would be too much. Instead of being able to simply omit a few items from the category, you have to go through the tedious process of clicking on EVERY.OTHER.ITEM. in that category. Since I’m too lazy and don’t want to do that, I figured out a work-around. While work-arounds are great for a quick fix, I never like using them long term. If there is something I want to do badly enough that I use a work-around every time I do it, there should be a ‘normal’ way to accomplish this…right?

My work around for omitting a few items from a category sale is to simply edit the listing, re-type in the same price and save it. Because you changed the listing it is no longer part of that sale. GENIUS! 🙂  I did this but missed a few and didn’t catch one before the item sold…Uh oh! To prevent this from happening again I decided to change the category for the items that I didn’t want to put on sale and lumping them all in my “OTHER” category and I would simply never put that category on sale.

I’ve been doing this for five days now and I have to say I like it! I sat down and created my weekly my sales in one sitting. I simply chose five categories, set them to start on Thursday at 12:01am and set them to end at midnight three days later.

At the time of this post, my first sale is nearly over and I’ve created three more. I’ve sold 18 items and grossed nearly $400. Not great, but not shabby either! That’s 18 more items moved out of my inventory…and I’ll take that!

 

Getting Back At It

Get OrganizedIt’s been about a month since the big move and I’m still not up and running at full speed. I’ve got a post about the move started, but haven’t gotten back to finish it and get it published.  I put my store on vacation mode for two weeks and decided to open back up on a Friday while in the valley staying at my mom’s. I figured anything I sold from Friday thru Monday I could pull and ship when I got home on Monday. That turned out to be a good moved because I had great sales that weekend!  I did manage to get home and get everything processed on Monday and to the post office before it closed at 3:30pm!

My biggest challenge since the move has been getting my inventory sorted, organized and back on shelves….not an easy task! I have about 3500 active listings, many of them have multiple quantities, making the number of inventory items to move in the 15,000 range…THAT’S A LOT OF STUFF TO MOVE! While I was extremely grateful for all the help I got moving my inventory, this is what I ended up with. Not only did I have a 10’X20′ storage unit with inventory but I also had stuff stored in spare bedroom closets, cabinets in my garage, a little in the office, a few things in the guest bedroom, etc. While I’ve now got a fabulous space that’s about 15’X40′, it’s taking forever for me to get motivated to get everything organized!  When I sell something I hold my breathe to see if it’s something that I can easily find and ship. So far I’ve found everything I’ve sold…a few things have taken a day or two, but I’ve managed to locate everything…whew!

We’ve had some crazy spring weather here in the mountains with lots of snow and rain and it’s kept me from wanting to spend too much time in the Quonset Hut getting things done, but I’m slowly making progress!  I’m still not there, mostly because I D-R-E-A-D putting together the shelves by myself. It is a task that is easily done in 20 minutes with two people but about 50-60 minutes when done alone. I have the best intentions of spending the day getting organized, but my motivation seems to fade too quickly. BUT, I have made a huge dent and here’s what it looks like now.

The purpose of this blog and the reason behind starting it was to document the value of the stuff we all have laying around the house. While I’m trying to get my personal belongings sorted and organized enough to actually start photographing them and getting them listed I have managed to get a few things listed that have actually sold! A few of the shockers are a 10 year old work skirt that could’ve easily been donated to a thrift store…instead I sold it for $30! I ran a 30% off sale on all my clothes last week and sold a work suit that I haven’t worn to work in at least 10 years for $35. Just last weekend I sold a Mickey Mouse glass pitcher and matching glass that was left over from the set of 11 I sold years ago and pocketed another $25.

IMG_0991I’ve decided to dig in and get some of my red kitchen items listed this week and then work on some of the decor items from my Mickey Mouse Bathroom. There’s a lot of money in all those cute decorations!  See those white Mickey Mouse Hands that are at both ends of that towel rack below?  Those are selling for $175 now! I really, really loved them and think I paid $50 for them when I did the bathroom 13 years ago…now that they are no longer available the price has really jumped! What’s fun about MMbath1starting with the Mickey Mouse stuff is that I bought 98% of these items on eBay to begin with…now they are going back for another Mickey fan to enjoy and I get some serious cash in my pockets!

Once I get the Mickey Mouse Bathroom stuff listed. I’m going to tackle my Christmas Decorations…I.Have.A.Ton!  They are fabulous and in great condition and when I look at those boxes in the den I just see $$$$.

Time Out For a Quick Amazon Post


While this is a place where I talk about my eBay business, I also dabble in selling on Amazon. I’ve learned from the Master himself, Chris Green. Last night Chris launched a new venture, BOLO Power, a paid membership group that distributes a list of BOLOs each week. Motivation

Got-motivationIt’s been tough to find the motivation to get going when there are soo many other things that need to be done….like a bazillion boxes to be sorted and organized. I’m not unpacking them and finding nooks and crannies to make a permanent home for any of the stuff I moved, I’m trying to sort and organize so when I get going I can pull a box, take pics, list everything from that box and move to the next box. But, I want to be able to list and sell similar stuff together…so I must sort and organize boxes.

All along it was the plan for me to have my office and work area upstairs in a room we specifically walled off for that purpose. So far, I have worked up there a total on ONE HOUR, and that was while I was being interviewed on a web show. Instead, I’ve taken over what is supposed to be the master bedroom. Instead of using it as such, we’ve turned it into a huge sewing and eBay work room. It has a huge walk in closet that we are using as a staging and photo area for clothes and an unfinished master bath that I’ve turned into my photo studio! I’ve set up the main area where the sinks are supposed to be with a table, back drop and lights to take photos and the huge shower is storing boxes and shipping supplies.

I was using the lighting and backdrop set up I purchased a few years ago. I’ve never really been happy with the lights and I keep playing with the bulbs and set up to try to get everything just right, but I still haven’t found the right combination. Sooo frustrating! I seriously think I take the best pics with just a simple point and shoot..WITH FLASH! I know it’s not recommended, but it really seems to be what works for me. Of course there are issues, like when trying to photo graph a deep purple, most reds, some blacks, etc.  I need to get this figured out soon.

118_0739I did manage to get a few pictures taken of some red kitchen stuff, playing with a new camera. I was DETERMINED to get some stuff listed so I could actually blog about what I was listing, how I determined price, and with some luck….a few sales!  Well, while I was taking the pics everything looked just fine, when I uploaded them, they were AWFUL. Back to the drawing board…sigh.

 

My ‘go to’ eBay selling Facebook group, The Thrifting Board, has listing challenges that last about two weeks. You post what your goals are and everyone cheers you on as you attempt to meet those goals. I try to commit, but I suck at challenges!  I was determined to make it happen this time..I was going to get my listings back up to 3500 (I’m currently at 3,352, down from nearly 3700 in February) but I’ve only managed to list seven things this week…heavy sigh.

It’s called life. Moving takes time. Settling in takes time. Getting a new set up going takes time. Everything else seems to be taking priority. The only part of my eBay business that takes priority today is shipping. But I’m determined to change that! I’ll give an update on the number of listings in my next post…I think I’ll make a section at the end of each post with that data. THIS will surely keep me motivated and accountable, right? Facebook Groups Are Great Resources

Back in the day selling online was more of a challenge in many ways. One of the ways was learning about different items you come across. What’s it called? What’s it worth? Is there a market for it?

Today we have Facebook Groups that bring like minded people together and it’s fabulous! There are all kinds of groups and I’ve talked about my favorite one, The Thrifting Board, in this post. That group helped me when I decided to go from being a part-time hobby seller to a serious seller. It helped me with key words when I was listing an item and drew a blank. It helped me to reach out of my comfort zone and sell items that were completely unfamiliar to me but very profitable. It helped me find a positive place to go with a bunch of like minded people who also love to sell on eBay….and I got all of this for FREE!

Raiken Profit GuestThere are also paid groups. I don’t belong to many paid groups, but every now and then you join one and it’s a good fit. I found that in The Green Room. I’d been watching Steve Raiken’s You Tube Videos but mostly watched his periscopes as he traveled around the country visiting pawn shops and thrift stores and sharing his scores. He was sourcing during the day and prepping his stuff to send into Amazon at night. I even got to meet up and source Pawn Shops with him when he was in Phoenix in January. I write about that in this post.

Networking with Steve and some other Green Room Members on that trip exposed me to a bigger world of Social Media. Steve is a master at it and has a huge You Tube, Periscope, Facebook, Snap Chat, etc. following. I was a guest on one of his shows last night and I got to talk about what I love most…eBay! You Sold That for How Much!?

Money PileI sold something last night that I’ve been thinking about all day, knowing I would post about it here to teach a few things. First, I bought these lights at Wal-Mart after Christmas. They sold for $24.99 and were 75% off, so my purchase price was $6.25 each. I wasn’t sure about them, but I bought 15 because for $6 how could I go wrong!? 🙂 They may end up being a long tail item (one that sits for awhile before it sells), but I was willing to take the gamble on these since I wasn’t doing my typical after Christmas sale shopping.
Lights - Listing

I listed them on Jan 14th for $59.99 with free shipping. SIXTY DOLLARS for lights Wal-Mart was selling for $25? Yes. I do this all the time. And I sold three sets to a buyer (with just 7 feedback) that lives a few towns over from me and put $180 in my pocket.

There is much discussion and ‘friendly debate’ about free shipping. To free ship or not to free ship, that is the question! I say this all the time….I have 3500+ listings in my store and every.single.one. has free shipping. Of course we all know that free shipping isn’t even close to free (and one of the reasons I priced these lights so high; each reel weighs about 4 pounds). BUT, eBay has said that offering free shipping, returns and one day shipping time will yield you better search results. They don’t give away too many ‘trade secrets’ but they tell us these three things will get us higher in search rankings, so I do all three on every.single.listing.

Lights - All saleI wanted to see if there were other listings today that were priced cheaper and put my theory to test on this sale. So I searched “400 Holiday Time Heavy Duty Clear Mini Lights” and yielded 6 returns. I sorted highest first and was surprised that my listing wasn’t at the top! The one above my listing was for 2 spools (there’s a key word I hadn’t thought of..spools!) at $50 with BO and $22 shipping. I quickly calculated that to $36 each before any BO negotiating. That’s nearly HALF of my asking price. The listing right below mine was for $32 with BO and FS….why didn’t the buyer pick that one!? Or the one below that which is on sale and priced out at $17.50 with $11.21 shipping? Or the two below that, both with BO options and free shipping?

Lights - Free ShippingHere’s my thought….buyers just shop. Many don’t price compare or look at all the options and details that sellers do. What do I think caused this buyer to purchase these ‘overpriced’ lights from me and not another seller? Free shipping. If you click on the ‘free shipping’ filter, there are two listings. BUT STILL, the other one is priced at $32 with a BO and free shipping. My first thought was perhaps that seller didn’t have three, but they do, they have 10 available. So the only other reason I can think of that this particular buyer bought these lights from me at double the cost because they needed them quickly and was looking for a quick delivery. I shipped today and they could arrive tomorrow….no extra cost to the buyer.

There are lots of ways to look at this sale and my reason for posting it here today is to show sellers that price is not always the determining factor for all buyers. That free shipping doesn’t mean you lose money on a sale. Good pics and great titles will always help, (and I’m the first to admit that not all my listings have GREAT pics, sometimes I’m just too lazy to reshoot them). Watchers and page views are just information and don’t mean anything when it comes to a sale. At the time of this post, this listing as 143 page views and 1 watcher….but I still sold three to one buyer.

Lights - SoldsAlso, if I had looked at the solds and listed my item just from the prices there, I would have left some good money on the table. A listing for a set of 2 sold for $47.99 plus $12 shipping on Feb 15. Another set of two sold for $40 with free shipping on March 21st and one sold for $23 (I assume with free shipping since it was a BO and when I researched the price in FlipperTools.com, it gives that price. Since the original listing was $18 plus $8.25 shipping, a sale price of $23 would have me conclude the price included shipping, even though the listing did not), sold on Mar 5th. Which brings up another point, if you’re going to ultimately offer an item with free shipping, why not list it that way and take advantage of all the buyers to click on the ‘free shipping’ filter.

Do Store Sales Sell Items?

As a long time eBay seller (it will be 19 years in July), there are certain notions that I would call old school. Things that were tried and true in the past but may not be true with today’s eBayer, buyers, online expectations, etc.  I am one that does not believe price is the deciding factor for my eBay sales. I  always price my items higher than the next guy and am generally willing to wait for my buyer to come along. This is not a business practice for some, but it has worked well for me for a long time now.

Price is rightMy thought process behind this is by the time I have sourced my item, taken the picture, written a  description, priced and listed the item, 95% of my work is done.  I can price my item high and wait 60-90 days for my buyer to come along. This generally works well and many of my items sell before they hit the 90 day mark, but I’ve got plenty that do sit for longer times. What to do in these cases….

I’ve never been a fan of using the Best Offer option on all of my listings. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game of negotiation and love to negotiate, but to me when I see a new listing with a $40 price AND Best Offer I think to myself ‘This seller wants $40 for this item, but they’ll take less….and they’re going to make me figure out how much less.’ I’ve played this game and it’s frustrating. Sometimes I engage with a seller, wait up to Negotiation48 hours for their response only to be countered with an offer of $39. If $39 is your best offer, you as a seller shouldn’t have listed the item with a Best Offer option. Now me, as a buyer is just frustrated at the back-and-forth time it has taken to get to this point and I move on to the next seller, probably one with a Buy-it-Now listing with free shipping. In today’s world of instant gratification and 2-day shipping, when I’m thinking about an item I want, I get online, find it and with a few clicks it’s paid for and I’m expecting it to show up on my doorstep in 2-3 days.

I’ve also never been a fan of sales. For me, putting an item on sale never seemed to generate any sales or provoke the watchers to pull the trigger and buy an item. That may not be the case for other sellers, but for me and my items, a sale doesn’t seem to do the trick…at least it hasn’t in the past. I’m writing this post today to be a reminder to me and to teach others that things that did or didn’t work in the past must be tried again. Buyers change. Platforms change. Expectations change. There are lots of variables that can have a different impact on what you do and how you do it today than it did two years ago…or longer.

SaleIn the effort to reduce the amount of inventory I must move, I have been putting my store on sale over and over again. At first it felt like it was the same thing. At one point in January I put every item in my store on a 15% off sale. I sold very few items that weekend.  At that time I decided to put all my clothes on a 50% off sale for about a week….and I sold a total of three clothing items. I kept up and kept trying and then my interest in sales fizzled and I hadn’t done a store sale in about a month. Then I hit a low point in sales. I had two days and only one sale. 3700 listings and only ONE SALE! I’ve got inventory to move and I prefer to move it via USPS and not a moving truck, so on a whim, late at night right before headed upstairs to bed, I decided to do another full store sale. It was quick and easy to click on every listing and make it 15% off. Easy, done, and I was on my way to bed.

The next morning I woke to four sales!  By mid-afternoon I had several more sales and I was beginning to think this full store sale thing might be the way to go. Throughout the day I enjoyed the cha-ching of my phone and noted the variety of items that were selling. Plush, clothes, kitchen items, Easter, Christmas, Halloween, the items that sold were all over the board and I was loving all the sales!

What I took away from the experience was that while store sales may not always create increased sales, it doesn’t hurt to try and as sellers we shouldn’t give up on an idea just because it doesn’t work the first, or second or even third time. I also realized that had I just put clothes on sale that would have resulted in one sale for the day and by putting the entire store on sale I’m reaching all my customers and watchers and that a 15% discount just might be the trick that gets them to pull the trigger.

This sale is running for a week….when it’s over I’ll come back and update this post with details on how it went.

Long Overdue Post – The House Sold

IMG_2900I have neglected this blog here, but it has been on my mind for weeks! I think about a topic to write about and then I lose interest in actually writing about it. It has been hard living in and working from my home while it is for sale. I’ve felt like I’ve been living in limbo for four months.

So much for the much anticipated 2-3 day sale….I’m actually glad it took four months as it has given me plenty of time to sell off some of my larger items so I won’t have to move them. Thinking about moving a large household and a 10’X20′ storage unit full of inventory is more than overwhelming.  I’m just plugging along, doing a little each day, and hoping to have it all done well ahead of the April 15th closing date.

As anyone who has taken almost four months to sell a house knows, the living in limbo part has to be the most difficult. Waiting for that call to schedule an appointment for a showing was so paralyzing. I had a tough time figuring out what to do with my day. Pulling out inventory to list or take pictures just turned my work space into a big mess. The idea of cooking anything and messing up the kitchen was out. It was not fun.

But now that I’ve got a close date, the inspections and drop ins are over, moving truck and date is lined up, I’m ready to get on with my next adventure! Now comes the ‘fun’ part of packing, donating and throwing away a whole bunch of “STUFF”.
